AstraZeneca, the German pharmaceutical company that has launched the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa (olanzapine), is set to make a deal with US rights holder Pfizer to sell it for $3.5 billion over the next five years.
The deal, which will be valued at about $1 billion, could be in the hands of drug companies in a way that could save the firm the cost of its patent-making process.
Pfizer and its other big drugmakers, including Eli Lilly, are set to start selling their versions of the drug over the next five years.
The deal follows an agreement with drugmakers that gave them exclusive rights to manufacture and market the drug for the US market, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.
Pfizer said the deal will give it the exclusive licence to make its antipsychotic drug Zyprexa, and will also have the ability to sell its generic version of the drug for a significantly smaller amount than its brand name product, at a price that is expected to be about $1 billion per year, compared with the annual cost of its generic version of the drug, at about $500 per pill.
Zyprexa is currently being marketed as a monotherapy for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression, the company said in a statement.
The company also is developing a treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is also known as obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Pfizer said it will launch the drug on Monday and will also sell it in other countries.
Zyprexa will have annual sales of $1 billion and could be priced at about $3 billion if the drug is sold in the US, the company said.
Pfizer said it is looking at other ways to reduce the costs of generic drugs, including other forms of the drug, including its antipsychotic drug, Zyprexa, and the newer, anti-coagulant drug dabigatran.
Zyprexa and the other antipsychotics will be sold in a combination of several generic drugs, including Seroquel and Abilify, said Pfizer. The combination of these drugs is called clozapine.
The company is also considering other new drugs as well as new drugs for depression and anxiety, said a Pfizer spokesperson, who did not return a request for comment.
The company's decision to market the drug is part of an effort by the US Food and Drug Administration to make sure that the company gets the best treatment for people who need it, the drug's patent was set to expire on April 23, the US FDA said in a statement.
